A Refreshing Choice for a Hot Weekend

What’s the perfect sip for a hot summer weekend?

For us, the answer this week was Blue Cork White from Blue Cork Winery. After spending some time with this bottle, we’re glad we picked it up.

One of the things we’ve enjoyed about doing these Weekly Wine Reviews is seeing our tasting skills slowly improve. We’re still far from experts, but this week we were pretty excited because many of the aromas and flavors we picked up matched what Blue Cork Winery describes for this wine.

That’s got to count for something.

First Impressions

At first glance, the wine shows a medium yellow color that could almost pass for pale gold depending on the light. It’s bright and clear in the glass and immediately looks like something you want to enjoy on a warm afternoon.

The aroma was the first thing that stood out. We picked up floral notes right away, along with honey, apricot, and pear. The honey was especially noticeable and almost made the wine seem sweet before taking the first sip.

What We Tasted

Once we did take that first sip, we found a really enjoyable balance between light sweetness and refreshing acidity.

The honey notes carried over from the aroma, while citrus flavors added brightness and helped keep the wine refreshing. It has a smooth, light-bodied feel with just enough tartness on the finish to make you want another sip.

This is the kind of wine that feels right at home on a patio, by the pool, or at a backyard barbecue.

Meet the Grapes

Blue Cork White is made from two grape varieties: Traminette and Cayuga. If you’ve spent much time exploring New Jersey wines, you’ve probably come across both names before.

Traminette

Traminette is known for producing aromatic wines with floral and fruit-forward characteristics. Many wines made from this grape feature notes of flowers, honey, apricot, and pear.

Based on what we tasted, Traminette likely contributes many of the floral aromas and honey-like notes that stood out from the start.

Cayuga

Cayuga, often called Cayuga White, is another grape that grows well throughout the Northeast. It’s known for producing fresh wines with bright acidity and fruit flavors.

The crisp, refreshing character we experienced in this blend likely comes from the Cayuga grape, helping balance the wine’s sweetness and giving it a clean finish.

Together, these two grapes create a wine that’s easy to drink while still offering plenty of flavor.

Food Pairings

During our tasting, we found it also worked really well with fresh fruit. Kiwi slices, strawberries, and grapes all seemed to complement the wine nicely and made for a simple but enjoyable pairing.

The combination of sweetness and acidity makes this a versatile bottle that could easily accompany a variety of summer meals.
