Weekly Wine Review: Is Bellview Winery’s 2022 Cabernet Franc One of New Jersey’s Best Hidden Gems?

Meanwhile, some bottles get tucked away in the wine rack and wait for the right moment to be opened. As a result, this week’s featured wine was opened at the perfect moment.

While looking through my collection, I came across another favorite from Bellview Winery. It’s always fun rediscovering a bottle you’ve enjoyed before because it gives you a chance to see if your palate has changed. So, of course, my wife and I decided it was the perfect opportunity to work on our tasting skills once again.

This week’s Weekly Wine Review takes a closer look at Bellview Winery’s 2022 Cabernet Franc, a New Jersey red that delivers classic Cabernet Franc character while remaining approachable enough for both new and experienced wine drinkers.

If you’ve been looking for a locally made Cabernet Franc to try, this one is definitely worth considering.

About Bellview Winery

Located in Landisville, New Jersey, Bellview Winery has built a reputation for producing quality wines from both classic vinifera grapes and hybrid varieties that thrive in New Jersey’s climate. Additionally, their diverse portfolio spans dry reds, crisp whites, fruit wines, and seasonal favorites.

Over the years, Bellview has become one of my favorite wineries to visit. Whether you’re stopping by for a tasting or simply looking to pick up a few bottles, there’s usually something new to discover.

The 2022 Cabernet Franc is another great example of why Bellview continues to be a popular destination for New Jersey wine lovers.

First Impressions

As soon as we uncorked the bottle, the aromas began to develop.

Even before taking the first sip, dark fruit notes began to fill the glass. That’s always a good sign because it creates anticipation before you even taste the wine.

This Cabernet Franc opens up nicely without needing a long decant, although giving it a little time to breathe certainly doesn’t hurt.

The Nose

One of my favorite parts of reviewing wine is seeing what aromas stand out.

Everyone’s palate is different, so what I pick up may not be exactly what you experience. That’s part of what makes wine tasting enjoyable.

For us, the first aroma was black cherry.

After spending a little more time with the glass, subtle notes of bell pepper began to appear, followed by a light touch of tobacco. Those savory characteristics are something many Cabernet Franc fans appreciate and help distinguish the varietal from some other red wines.

The combination of fruit and earthy notes created a balanced, inviting aroma.

On the Palate

The first sip confirmed what the aromas suggested.

This is a dry red wine with a smooth mouthfeel and soft tannins that gently hug your gums without becoming overpowering. The wine carries medium acidity, which keeps everything balanced and makes it a versatile choice for food pairing.

Coming in at 12.9% ABV, it isn’t overly heavy or overly bold. Instead, it strikes a nice balance between structure and drinkability. It’s the type of wine that encourages you to slow down, enjoy the conversation, and appreciate everything that’s happening in the glass.

Food Pairing Ideas

Cabernet Franc has always been a food-friendly varietal, and Bellview’s 2022 release is no exception.

I’d recommend pairing this bottle with:

  • Grilled steaks
  • Barbecued pork
  • Dried or cured meats
  • Burgers fresh off the grill
  • Roasted beef
  • Charcuterie boards with aged cheeses

The wine’s acidity helps cut through richer foods while the savory notes complement grilled flavors especially well.

If you’re planning a backyard barbecue or simply cooking dinner at home, this Cabernet Franc would make an excellent companion.

Why Cabernet Franc Works So Well in New Jersey

Cabernet Franc has become one of New Jersey’s signature red grape varieties, and for good reason. The state’s growing conditions allow the grape to ripen while still maintaining its natural acidity and distinctive aromas. Many New Jersey wineries produce excellent Cabernet Franc, each offering its own unique expression of the varietal.

Bellview’s version is a balanced style that’s approachable without sacrificing the characteristics that make Cabernet Franc so enjoyable.

Whether you’re new to the varietal or already a fan, it’s an easy-to-appreciate bottle.
